Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty) in Nashville

Office Located in Brentwood, TN

Overview

Ear surgery, or Otoplasty, is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. The surgery is mainly performed on children between the ages of 6 and 14, but carries no additional risks for adults.

Your Consultation

At the time of your consultation, you will meet with your chosen board-certified surgeon who will talk with you about your goals and the best way to achieve your desired outcomes. Our goal is to make sure every one of your questions is answered and you feel comfortable with your knowledge of the procedure. In your initial consultation, one of our surgeons will evaluate your health, discuss your medical history, and carefully examine and assess your ears, comparing them to each other and to “normal” guidelines. He will then review your goals and make recommendations based on his evaluation. The techniques used in the ear reshaping procedure will be described in detail, and informational materials will be provided. Photos of your ears will be taken to document your results.

We have three Patient Care Coordinators who work closely with you through your entire time in our practice, serving as your resource for any questions or concerns you have along the way. After your time talking to the surgeon, your Patient Coordinator will provide you with a detailed, written estimate of surgical fees for your procedure when you have your initial consultation at Cool Springs Plastic Surgery in Nashville, Tennessee. She will assist you in selecting a date for your surgery, convenient for your schedule. Your Patient Care Coordinator will also inform you about all payment options available in our office. Information regarding “Payment Options” are detailed under the “About” tab at the top of our web page.

Ear Reshaping Surgery: What to Expect

PRE-OPERATIVE

It is imperative that you do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or products containing these medicines for at least two weeks prior to surgery.
Please shower the morning of your procedure, but do not apply deodorant, creams, lotions, powders or oil to your skin. Please do not wear jewelry or makeup, and do not bring valuables with you to surgery.

DAY OF SURGERY

Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia. The surgery lasts two to three hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery. The surgeon will make a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the cartilage, in order to re-sculpt it into the new shape. In most cases, ear surgery will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear that will fade with time.

POST-OPERATIVE

Most otoplasty patients are active within a few hours after surgery. The patient’s head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery to promote the best molding and healing of the ears, and the doctor will prescribe medication to help alleviate any potential pain. After about three days, the bulky bandages will be replaced with a lighter, more headband-like dressing. Stitches are usually removed, or will dissolve, in about a week.

Any activity that would allow purposeful or accidental bending of the ear should be avoided for the first month. Most adults can go back to work after five days. Children can go back to school after seven days.

Risks

Risks of complications are quite low but do exist. Problems may include infection, bleeding, asymmetry, temporary or even permanent numbness, visible folding of the ear cartilage and prominence of the scar behind the ear.

Ear Reshaping Costs

Your Patient Coordinator will provide you with a detailed, written estimate of fees for your procedure when you have your initial consultation at Cool Springs Plastic Surgery. Your “Estimate of Surgical Fees” will include: implants, surgeon’s fee, operating room and the anesthesiologist’s fee.
