Your Initial Consultation:
At your initial consultation at Cool Springs Plastic Surgery in Nashville, Tennessee you will be given the opportunity to meet with one of our doctors and staff. The consultation consists of several phases:
Meet with the Doctor
One of our skilled surgeons will talk with you about your expectations and the best way to achieve your goals. They will also discuss your medical history and your current medical status. We will then assess the breast width, height and projection. An important part of your consultation will be determining the final breast size, taking into consideration your overall body size and shape, as well as your pre-operative breast size. The doctor’s measurements will play a major role in the selection of your implant and one of our nurses will assist you in trying on different sizes of implants so that you can get an accurate idea of the size that gives you a look that you desire. You are encouraged to bring garments that, when trying on the different implants, help you visualize how you want to look.
Your Patient Coordinator will provide you with a detailed, written Estimate of Surgical Fees for your procedure when you have your initial consultation at Cool Springs Plastic Surgery in Nashville, Tennessee. She will assist you in selecting a date for your surgery that is convenient with your schedule. Information regarding “Payment Options” are detailed under the “About” tab at the top of our web page.
Once Your Surgery is Scheduled:
It is important that you do not smoke or take aspirin or certain other drugs before surgery. We will let you know a suitable period in which to abstain from these substances. We also recommend that you undergo a mammogram before the procedure.
Do not eat or drink after midnight on the evening before surgery (unless directed to take medications by your Patient Coordinator). Please shower the morning of your procedure, but do not apply deodorant, creams, lotions, powders or oil to your skin. Please do not wear jewelry or makeup, and do not bring valuables with you to surgery.
In most cases, surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia. The surgery typically lasts around one hour. An adult should escort you on the day of surgery and remain with you at home for the first 24 hours.
Day of Surgery
During the procedure, an incision will be made either in the breast area (near the areola or underneath the breast, in the crease) or in the armpit. The exact technique and location of incision, however, will depend on each individual case.
The implant will be inserted through the incision and placed carefully behind the nipple, either under the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. Once the implants are in place, the openings are sewn up and your breasts are wrapped for support and protection.
Afterward, you may sleep and rest in any comfortable position. Rest quietly for 24 hours following surgery; when you get up, do so slowly, as you may feel dizzy or lightheaded.
Even though you will be up and about in a day or two, it is important that you limit your activity for optimal recovery. Expect to see some degree of temporary swelling and discoloration. The wrap will be removed after a few days, at which time you may be asked to wear a support bra. Avoid any heavy lifting, pushing or pulling for four to six weeks. Expect breast swelling for several weeks. You may be able to return to work in a few days, but avoid any vigorous exercise or direct contact with the breasts for a few weeks, as this can stress the incisions and lead to complications such as delayed wound healing or prominent scars. You should also avoid sexual activity for a week.

Risks of complications are quite low but do exist. Problems include infection, bleeding and capsular contraction, a hardening of the scar tissue around the treated area that may require additional surgery to remove the scar tissue or the implant. You may experience temporary or permanent altered sensations, including numbness. Scarring will take some time to heal and fade completely. If the scarring does not fade, corrections can be made. There is also a possibility of implant rupture, in which case the saline will be absorbed harmlessly into the body, and you will have to decide whether you would like to receive another implant.
Before long, you will enjoy breasts that are larger and in better proportion to your figure. You will fill out your clothing better and will experience newfound confidence as a result.
